Beef Turnovers – 2012 Iowa State Fair – 1st Place Winner

Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 c. onion, diced
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 c. mushrooms, sliced
- 1 1/2 c. cooked potatoes, diced
- 1/2 c. Dorothy Lynch Home Style
- 2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. shortening
- 2 T. butter
- 1 egg, separate yolk from white
- 1 tsp. vinegar
- 1/2 c. water

The Method
Filling Instructions:
- Cook ground beef until browned.
- Add onion, garlic, potatoes, and mushrooms.
- Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Stir in Dorothy Lynch Home Style.
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
Pastry Instructions:
- Mix flour and salt.
- In a different bowl, combine shortening and butter.
- Stir in egg yolk, vinegar, and water to the shortening/butter mixture.
- When mixed thoroughly, pour into the flour/salt mixture until it reaches a dough-like consistency.
- Roll the dough into 8 balls – then flatten into squares.
- Fill each square with 3 T. of the filling mixture and fold over to make a triangle.
- Brush triangles with egg white and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
Optional dipping sauce:
- Combine 2 T. Dorothy Lynch Home Style, 2 T. honey, and 2 T. brown mustard.
